Born in London in 1886, Philip Gregory Needell belongs to a generation of British artists whose sensitivity was nourished both by the Romantic tradition and the major upheavals of the early 20th century. Trained in drawing at Regent Street Polytechnic while working for Westminster Bank, he developed a strong preference early on for precise observation and the luminous construction of landscapes.
Mobilized in the Royal Navy during the First World War, Needell created several maritime scenes of great intensity, now preserved at the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth. After the conflict, he dedicated himself fully to painting and regularly traveled to France between 1925 and 1963, finding in the French landscapes – coasts, villages, changing lights – a lasting source of inspiration.
His work, initially influenced by Cotman and Turner, evolves towards a more streamlined style, sometimes close to abstraction, while maintaining great atmospheric mastery. Needell is also interested in Japanese prints and personally creates colored woodcuts, demonstrating a rare and refined artistic curiosity.
A sought-after artist in the Anglo-Saxon market, Needell has been featured numerous times in public sales, mainly for his landscape paintings and watercolors, highly appreciated for their poetry and sense of visual silence. His views of France, Great Britain, or distant ports captivate with their balance, chromatic softness, and ability to capture the moment.
A work by Philip Gregory Needell brings a note of serenity and elegance to any collection, carried by the gaze of a traveling painter whose sensitivity remains timeless.
