Original in-12 edition of Buffon's works, in 12/14 volumes published by the presses of the Royal Printing House between 1774 and 1779.
Our copy, lacking volumes VII and X, includes:
T1 and 2. Theory of the Earth. – 1774. Frontispiece portrait, 2 plates, and 2 maps.
T3. Natural History of Animals – 1774. 7 plates.
T4. Natural History of Man – 1774.
T5. Discourse on the Nature of Animals – 1774.
T6. Continuation of the Theory of the Earth & Introduction to the History of Minerals – 1774. 15 plates and one map.
T8 and 9. Experimental Part – 1776.
T 11. Serving as a supplement to the Natural History of Man – 1778. 1 map.
T12 and 13. The Epochs of Nature – 1778. 1 map and 6 plates.
T.14: Natural History. Table of Contents. - 1789
The entire set is bound in antique bindings of full marbled calf, with spines decorated with gilded panels adorned with small tools, titles and volume numbers in gilded lettering, and marbled edges.
Decorative and solid bindings with luminous gilding. Corners pierced, some rubbing on the edges. Five headbands cut off and minor leather loss at the foot of volume II. Interior well preserved, rare foxing. In volume 5, a stain near the hinge at the end of the volume, and the paper of the Table volume is slightly yellowed. The front free endpaper of the first volume is detached. A small tear on a map.
In good condition.
