Vintage chess set with an inlaid wooden chessboard and turned wooden Staunton‑style pieces, likely Italian artisanal production from 1960–1970.
Description from the seller
Elegant vintage chess set consisting of a chessboard in inlaid woods and handcrafted wooden chess pieces, likely of Italian artisanal origin, dating from the second half of the twentieth century (around the 1960s–1970s).
The chessboard is made with light and dark wooden squares carefully fitted together, framed by an elegant inlaid border with geometric motifs, typical of the Italian artisanal tradition of the period. The design of the frame, with stepped inserts and dark decorative fillets, gives the board an elegant and well-proportioned appearance, suitable for both playing and display.
The chess pieces are in simplified Staunton style, carved in wood.
Light-colored pieces in natural wood (probably boxwood or a similar type).
Dark pieces of wood stained black.
The shapes are harmonious and consistent with the period: kings with a simple cross, bishops with a traditional cut, carved horses with a sober and non-industrial style. The overall effect is balanced and well matched to the chessboard in terms of size, style, and period.
The set has no visible marks or factory labels, a common feature of many handcrafted productions intended for quality domestic use in the 1960s–1970s.
Condition
Good overall condition considering its age.
The chessboard shows normal signs of age and a patina consistent with use.
The inlays are well adhered, with no evident lifting.
The chess sets are complete and intact, with slight signs of use consistent with their age.
No invasive restoration reported.
An authentic and decorative set, ideal for collectors, chess enthusiasts, or lovers of wooden objects in Italian design of the twentieth century.
Especially suitable as a living room or collection chessboard, with a strong aesthetic impact.
