Description from the seller
Large Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Dish
China, 19th century or earlier
With Kangxi mark
A very large and impressive Chinese porcelain dish finely decorated in underglaze cobalt blue. The central medallion is painted with a lively figural scene depicting a group of scholars and attendants gathered in a mountainous landscape, engaged in conversation and leisure. The figures are rendered with expressive faces and fluid brushwork, showing great attention to movement and narrative detail. The surrounding landscape elements—rocks, trees, and misty mountains—are softly shaded, creating depth and atmosphere.
The broad cavetto is framed by a finely painted diaper-pattern border, interspersed with shaped cartouches containing floral motifs. The quality of the cobalt blue is particularly attractive, ranging from deep, saturated tones to softer washes, typical of traditional Chinese blue-and-white porcelain.
The reverse is decorated with bamboo sprays around the rim and bears a Kangxi mark within double circles at the center. The dish has been examined under UV light and shows no signs of restoration or repair. Condition is overall very good, with two small chips to the reverse of the foot ring (see photo 21). There are minor firing spots and kiln-related imperfections, consistent with age and entirely normal for porcelain of this type.
Diameter: 40 cm
Provenance: Private collection, the Netherlands
A striking and decorative example of large-scale Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, well suited for both collectors and interior display.
Shipping Information:
Professionally packed and shipped in a wooden crate within 3 working days via UPS.
