First edition of the 20 volumes published between 1845 and 1862 of the famous work by Adolphe Thiers (1797-1877) on the Consulate and the Empire. Carefully printed on good quality paper. Decorated with 7 beautiful engravings (4 in volume 7 and 3 in volume 16).

Decorative copy, from the period, bound in green half-leather. Spine with raised bands decorated with gilded fleurs-de-lis and the title in gilt letters.

Condition: Solid volumes, slightly rubbed leather and a somewhat sun-damaged spine. Some marks on the covers, browning inside, several pages darkened. The first page of each volume shows stains or restoration (ex-libris with transparent stamp). Condition is fair.

A major classic of Napoleonic historiography published by Adolphe Thiers, a journalist and historian, member of the Académie française (elected in 1833), a politician who served as minister and President of the Council under the July Monarchy, deputy during the Second Republic and the Second Empire, and then the first President of the Third Republic (1871-1873).
