Description from the seller
Rare collection of old sheet music – George Onslow – 'Complete collection of Quartets and Quintets' – Paris, Pleyel & Cie (19th century).
Lot consisting of 3 volumes (190pp / 159pp / 159pp) of recorded music, featuring the string quartets and quintets of George Onslow (1784–1853), a prominent figure in 19th-century French chamber music, sometimes nicknamed 'the French Beethoven' due to the significance of his catalog of quartets and quintets.
Parisian edition by Pleyel and Cie, a prestigious music publisher (and piano maker), featuring musical engraving (printing from plates), typical of fine editions of the period: delicate notation, highly legible, on old paper.
Condition: Marbled cardboard covers from the period showing wear, rubbing, and dull edges/corners (see photos). The interior shows foxing and age spots on the pages (old paper), with no defects obstructing reading: the text and notes remain clear and well contrasted.
Very beautiful set for a collector of old scores, chamber music, Pleyel editions, and the history of music publishing in the 19th century.
