The painter Jan Frederik Schütz was born in Middelburg in 1817 into a family of seafarers. Initially, he intended to become a sailor, but his passion turned to painting, and because of his artistic aspirations, he was admitted to the Middelburg Drawing Academy in 1839, where the renowned marine painter Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek also trained.

Jan Frederik Schütz painted and drew primarily seascapes and riverscapes. He also worked as a drawing and painting teacher. He taught, among others, A.A. Abrahams, G.H.G. von Brucken Fock, B.H. Stomps, and his two sons, Willem Johannes Schutz and Jan Frederik Schutz Jr.

He had many admirers, especially in the Zeeland area.

Works by J.F. Schutz hang in various museums, including the Hague Municipal Museum and the Zeeuws Museum in Middelburg.

The painting is carefully packaged and sent by registered mail.
