Beautiful copy of this first edition of the account of the E. Gentil mission 1895-1898.
Beautiful iconography consisting of a frontispiece portrait, 126 black and white illustrations based on photographs and drawings, with and without text. Complete with the folded map at the end of the volume.
Emile Gentil, a Naval Officer, aimed to reach Lake Chad and put an end to Rabah's Empire. Rabah, the warlord of Sudan and a slave trader, was the Sultan of Bornu in Central Africa until the French conquest of Chad (Numa Broc: Africa, p.158). Emile Gentil has given his name to Port-Gentil, the economic capital of Gabon.
