Description from the seller
A very beautiful edition of the Quran, published towards the end of the 19th century, carefully printed based on the calligraphy of Hafız Osman (1642-1698), a famous master of Ottoman calligraphy of the 17th century.
Opens with a charming double page in green and gold, followed by well-printed text within a double border strip, with some pages featuring ornamental margins.
Kept in an elegant green percaline flap binding, with gold borders and frieze framing the covers, corner fleurons, and a smooth spine decorated similarly with gold flowers. Under a matching full cloth slipcase.
Beautiful example, well preserved, worn case with slightly stained back. Interior fresh and clean, free of foxing or very rare.
Hâfiz Osman (Ottoman Turkish: حافظ عثمان) was a master of Ottoman calligraphy. He is known for improving several scripts and developing a layout model, notably of the hilya. Due to his innovations, he is considered one of the three most important Ottoman calligraphers alongside Cheikh Hamdullah and Ahmed Karahisari.
In-12 (15 x 10cm); about 250 pages.
