Description from the seller
Giuseppe Bacci (1921–2018) – Futurist skier
Tempera on cardboard
Probable preparatory sketch for the Cortina Olympics, circa 1956.
Dimensions: 50 x 35 cm
In anticipation of the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina 2026, a lively and rare tempera on cardboard signed by hand by Giuseppe Bacci (GIUSBACCI) is proposed. Bacci, a Bologna-born illustrator and advertiser, is known for his ability to blend modern graphics, dynamism, and narrative flair. The artwork depicts a skier captured at full speed, with strong references to the futurist spirit, evident in the compositional approach, the lines of force, and the energetic synthesis of movement.
The presence of the winter sports theme, the graphic style typical of those years, and the reference to Cortina in red suggest that it could be a sketch created on the occasion of the 1956 Cortina Winter Olympics, a period during which Bacci was working intensely as an illustrator and creator of images with a high communicative impact.
Giuseppe Bacci (Bologna, 1921 – 2018), also known by the pseudonym Gius Bacci, was a significant figure in Italian illustration and advertising after World War II. Starting in 1948, he created covers and illustrations for books and magazines, collaborating with the publishing house Cappelli. Passionate about motors—an interest inherited from his father Aris—he produced iconic illustrations dedicated to brands such as Alfa Romeo, Bugatti, Ducati, Gilera, and Maserati, often inspired by the futurist myth of speed. In the 1950s and 1960s, he worked for major advertising agencies, signing successful campaigns, including those for the Buton distillery and the famous Gino Cervi car parades. Later, he collaborated with Rizzoli and Mondadori for magazines like L’Europeo, Panorama, and Sorrisi e Canzoni, as well as creating portraits and cartoons for the newspaper L’Indipendente.
