Description from the seller
The life of Saint Charles Borromeo, cardinal of the title of Sainte Praxede, archbishop of Milan, by Sir Antoine Godeav, bishop of Vence.
Paris Augustin Courbé, at the palace, in the merchants' gallery, with a palm.
First edition 1652
658 pages + 8 pages of table + 30 pages Epistle and preface + 38 pages Hymn of St. Charles Borromeo + venerable brother + approval.
Complete book, fresh interior. Binding in poor condition with missing parts on the spine, scratched and cracked covers.
Rare work. There are a few copies of the first edition from 1652.
Born into a wealthy Lombard family in 1538, Charles Borromée saw a brilliant ecclesiastical career opening before him, aided by his uncle, Pope Pius VI.
In fact, Charles became a cardinal before he was twenty-three years old.
But he does not let himself be intoxicated by titles and honors.
Appointed Archbishop of Milan in 1564, he was committed to reorganizing and reforming his diocese, starting by setting an example of an austere and charitable life.
He uses all his income for the maintenance of seminars, hospitals, and schools, and for alleviating the suffering of the most destitute.
He transforms the worship service in his cathedral to give it more grandeur, participates in the Council of Trent, and has the Catechism of Trent drafted.
During the plague that ravaged Milan in 1576, he demonstrated his devotion and zeal, braving the contagion, providing aid and comfort in all the houses and hospitals.
He died on November 3, 1584, exhausted by fatigue and austerities. He is commemorated on November 4.
