Description from the seller

Winter landscape with farm and figures – oil on canvas

Dimensions: approximately 40 × 70 cm

Technique: Oil paint on canvas

Period: End of the 19th century – beginning of the 20th century

Condition: Good authentic condition with a beautiful patina.

Artistic description

An enchanting winter landscape with a rural scene full of warmth and atmosphere. In the middle of the canvas, a farmer's wife with a red coat walks beside a rider on horseback, while some cattle slowly move towards the farmstead. The snow covers the field in a soft silvery light, subtly reflecting under a pale sky.

The brushwork is lively and spontaneous — with short, thick strokes that make the textures of snow, branches, and snow-covered roofs palpable. The artist masters the play of light and shadow, making the scene appear both realistic and poetic.

Historical and stylistic context
This painting closely aligns with the tradition of 19th-century Flemish and Dutch landscape painting, in which nature and farm life were central themes.

The work recalls the style of masters such as Andreas Schelfhout, Louis Apol, or Hendrik van Minderhout, who were known for their romantic winter scenes with a fine sense of atmosphere and light.

The woman's red coat and the subtle smoke plume above the farms add a human warmth to the cold winter scene — a typical feature of North European painting from that period.

Technical features

Oil paint on canvas
Color palette: muted earth tones, broken white, gray-blue, and accents of red.
Composition: balanced between foreground vegetation and depth perception towards the horizon.
Support structure: old wooden frame with authentic mounting.
Finishing: original gilded frame in good condition.

Summary

A charming and atmospheric scene that evokes the nostalgia of rural winter life. The combination of realism, romance, and light play makes this painting particularly appealing to enthusiasts of 19th-century landscape painting.
