黄土 (Ōdo) - Japanese for ochre earth - is a large abstract painting that rests between landscape and memory. Layers of yellow ochre, raw sienna and yellow iron oxide are slowly built up into soft, horizontal bands that suggest distant ground and low hills dissolving into light. The image never fully resolves into a specific place, remaining instead as a quiet impression of warmth, soil and dust suspended in air.
The pigments are applied in many thin washes, allowing them to soak into the canvas and create subtle gradations rather than hard edges.
