Description from the seller

This is an authentic Japanese Shino ware tea bowl (chawan), accompanied by its original wooden storage box (tomobako).

The front of the bowl features a hand-painted combined character motif (gōji / ligature-style character), a traditional decorative element often associated with auspicious meaning, harmony, and good fortune. The bold yet playful brushwork contrasts beautifully with the soft, milky white Shino glaze.

The tea bowl displays classic Shino characteristics, including a warm, slightly irregular form, subtle feldspar texture, and natural glaze variations with occasional fire marks, all of which enhance its wabi-sabi aesthetic. These features make the bowl especially appealing for tea ceremony use and for collectors of Japanese ceramics.

With its wooden box, this piece was clearly valued and carefully preserved. It is suitable for:

Japanese tea ceremony practice

Collectors of Shino ware

Display in a tea room or tokonoma

A refined and meaningful Japanese gift
