Description from the seller

Good complete copy in eight volumes of the 'First Voyage' by Captain Cook, written based on the journals kept by the various commanders by J. Hawkesworth (see preface). This is a copy of a new edition well printed in 1796 (the original from 1774).
Contents: Volume I: Account of a voyage around the world in the years 1764, 1765, and 1766 by Commodore Byron, commander of the King's ship 'Le Dauphin'. Volume II: Account of a voyage around the world in the years 1766, 1767, 1768, and 1769 by Philippe Carteret, Esquire, commander of the 'Swallow', a sloop of Her Majesty the British Crown. Volume III: Account of a voyage around the world in the years 1766, 1767, and 1768 by Samuel Wallis, commander of the King's ship 'Le Dauphin'. Volumes IV to VIII: Account of a voyage around the world in the years 1769, 1770, and 1771 by Lieutenant Jacques Cook, commander of the King's ship 'L'Endeavour'.

For bibliophiles, Cook's Voyages (the first in 8 volumes in 1774, the second in 6 volumes, the third in 4 volumes in 1785, plus 3 atlases published separately, and 1 supplementary volume to the third voyage) are a landmark in travel literature. They have been issued in relatively few editions and are particularly valued for the quality of the text.

The three circumnavigations carried out by Captain James Cook, totaling 12 years at sea, leave an unparalleled legacy and countless knowledge, not only in the field of cartography but also in botany and geography.

Go where no man has gone before me, and as far as I believe any man can go—that was Captain Cook's ambition.

The translation was carried out by Suard & M. Demeunier.

Author: John Hawkesworth; John Byron; Philip Carteret; Samuel Wallis; James Cook.
Title: [First Voyage]: Account of the voyages undertaken by order of Her Britannic Majesty, and successively executed by Commodore Byron, Captain Carteret, Captain Wallis, and Captain Cook, aboard the ships the Dauphin, the Swallow, and the Endeavour.
Lausanne, at Hignou and Company - 1796
