The teal is widely distributed in the Palearctic. It occupies almost all of Western Europe, occasionally also Central Europe. In Scandinavia, it can be found along the shores of the Baltic Sea. To the east, its range extends across a broad strip up to Sakhalin Island. It winters in Africa, India, and Southeast Asia.

The marzaiole lay their eggs near swamps and ponds. In winter, they stay close to lakes and in floodplain river areas.
