Description from the seller
A superb lacquered kô’dansu 小箪笥 (small cabinet of drawers), fully finished in lacquer and decorated with an elegant sakura 桜 (cherry blossom) design. Fully restored, and cleaned.
The front is dominated by a large, curving cherry tree with branches laden with blossoms rendered in red, silver, and gold. The trunk is accentuated by a prominent gilded knot. The sloping ground beneath the tree is further adorned with a flowering shrub of yellow yamabuki 山吹 (Japanese rose). The scene is softly enveloped by speckled mist.
The decoration is executed in polychrome hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer) and takamaki-e 高蒔絵 (high-relief lacquer) on a deep black rôiro’urushi 蝋色漆 ground, framed by refined golden fundame 粉溜地 rims.
The cabinet is fitted with nine drawers of varying sizes, each mounted with elegant silver hirute-shaped bail handles paired with leaf-shaped protective plates. The sides are equipped with silver warabite-shaped bail handles for transport. The undulating base rim is finished in golden fundame lacquer. The top, reverse and sides are further decorated with scattered sprays of cherry blossoms.
The right side bears a signature and seal:
“Made by Jitokusai Gyokuzan” 自得齋玉山作.
