Description from the seller
A monumental work that was produced in many editions and versions in the years around Livingstone's death. The author is not stated in this version but it was John Roberts.
This work is a greatly enlarged (in both format and text) version of the previous item, paragraphs and whole chapters having been added to the original text: "The narrative is supplemented by ... extracts from the writings of other African travellers and missionaries and by graphic details of the manners and customs of the peoples, and the animal and vegetable life of South Africa and Central Africa." (Preface). It was a companion to the Victorian family bible, displayed with pride after prayers in admiration of the greatest of the Victorian explorers. The first ed. has 25 chapters and goes up to the commencement of Stanley's expedition to Africa in 1874. (A Bibliography Of Published Works By And About David Livingstone 1843 -1975, Lloyd & Lashbrook).
Books in fair condition for age.Colour frontis in vol 1 + coloured map in vol 2 & numerous tinted plates. All edges gilt.
Front board of Vol. 1 reattached so a bit fragile on opening. Hinges of both volumes a bit fragile but all pages attached. Pages 17-36 in vol 1 creased-see photos. Cloth worn at the extremities, wear around edges and corners, shelfwear, light losses. Gilt a bit faded. Some occasional marks to the text and plates but generally clean. A few pages with light wear on margins. Wear and stains on endpapers.
Plus: Snapshots - a Missionary Card Game!!!!! his interesting educational card game contains 12 sets of four cards each (total = 48 cards). The object is to collect as many complete sets as possible. The rules are like any quartet or happy families game. The illustrations depict people from different cultural contexts engaged in their traditional ways of life. The explanatory notes which accompany the game inform us about different ways of living including religious faith. They also reason that the indigenous people should give up their own religious practices or ‘idol worship’, which cannot save them. Instead, missionaries are there to preach the gospel and convert them to Christianity. Published by the Church Missionary Society, London, c.1910.
