Testament politique du Cardinal Duc de Richelieu, by Armand du Plessis, Duke of Richelieu; Amsterdam, 1708; reissue edition; bound in full purple calf leather; 201 pages in one volume containing 2 parts.
Description from the seller
Old edition given in Amsterdam in 1708, in 2 volumes, octavo format, here bound in a full porphyry calf leather volume.
First published in 1688, the political testament of Cardinal Richelieu, whose authenticity is now established, was written alongside his governmental actions, serving as both an echo and a continuation of them. Yet, many of his remarks transcend the immediate historical context of the 1620s-1640s. In a sometimes striking style, it is the very philosophy of the role of statesman—its principles, demands, and constraints—that the great minister lays out, and which remain relevant today.
Armand-Jean du Plessis, bishop of Luçon, Cardinal Richelieu, and chief minister from 1624 to 1642, needs no introduction.
