Geneva
The new theater of Geneva. Description - Plans - Miscellaneous information - View of the Hall - with numbered seats.
Geneva, Jules Carey, 1879
in-16 (15 x 9 cm); 49 pages. 1 leaf and 1 folding plate.
It was in 1862 that the idea of building a grand theater was conceived, which only became possible in 1873 thanks to the inheritance of Duke Charles II of Brunswick and a donation of 3,000 square meters of land by the State of Geneva. A competition was launched for the creation of a new opera house, but despite a clear winner, the project was awarded to an non-participant, architect Jacques-Élysée Goss. The prestigious building, inspired by the Opéra Garnier in Paris, has a capacity of 1,300 seats and opened its doors on October 2, 1879, with a performance of Rossini's Guillaume Tell.
