Description from the seller
Set of 6 'Cesca' chairs by Marcel Breuer, produced by Gavina (late 1960s).
These Cesca chairs, an absolute icon of 20th-century design, represent Marcel Breuer's revolutionary vision and Gavina's excellence in manufacturing. Designed in 1928, they embody Bauhaus aesthetics and the innovation of cantilever design.
Marcel Breuer and the Revolution of Steel Tubular
Marcel Breuer (1902-1981), a key figure of the Bauhaus movement, was a pioneer in the use of tubular steel. Inspired by the handlebar of his bicycle, he recognized the potential of this material to create lightweight and durable furniture:
The Project: The Cesca chair (a tribute to daughter Francesca) revolutionized the concept of seating by eliminating the rear legs.
Historical Value: Gavina's production in the 1960s demonstrates superior craftsmanship, making this set a highly sought-after collectible piece compared to modern industrial productions.
Details of the Lotto and Authenticity
The set consists of six original chairs produced in San Lazzaro di Savena.
Materials: Structure in chromed steel tubing, frames in black lacquered beech wood and Vienna straw.
Signs of authenticity: originality is confirmed by the tubular terminals being closed and not sealed with steel caps as was the case with copies. This is a distinctive technical detail of Gavina's production.
Additionally, under the seats, the original Gavina adhesive labels are present, and the residual Vienna straw, originally hand-woven onto the chair, is still visible.
Conditions of the Lot
The set has undergone a professional restoration and is ready to be placed in a prestigious environment.
Structure: The steel is solid, and after careful cleaning and polishing, the chrome has regained its shine, showing only slight shading.
Wooden frames: The frames for seats and backs have been restored and are in excellent condition.
Vienna straw: The straw has been professionally replaced on all elements, ensuring durability and integrity for the coming decades.
Final condition: The chairs are in excellent condition, combining the charm of vintage with the functionality of new.
This set of 6 chairs represents a rare opportunity to acquire a piece of Bauhaus design history in its most prestigious edition, highly sought after by collectors.
The Designer: Marcel Breuer (1902-1981)
A pioneer of modern design, Breuer managed to find the perfect balance between modernity and tradition. The Cesca chair is universally recognized as one of the ten most important design objects of the last century.
The Producer: Gavina
Founded by Dino Gavina and chaired by Carlo Scarpa, the Gavina company played a fundamental role in Italian design. Its production in the 1960s is renowned for its extremely high craftsmanship and philological fidelity to the original projects of the masters.
