Description from the seller
This expanded second edition of Pierre Fauchard’s landmark treatise represents the true foundation of modern dentistry. In this work, Fauchard offers the first comprehensive and systematic treatment of dental anatomy, pathology, and therapeutic practice. His observations on restorative techniques, oral surgery, dental instruments, and the construction of prosthetic appliances revolutionized the field and shaped all subsequent developments in dental science.
Among the major innovations introduced in this edition are the principles of cavity filling, the fabrication of functional dentures, and the recognition of oral hygiene as an essential component of medical care. For this reason, the work is widely regarded as the birth certificate of modern dentistry.
Illustrated with 42 finely engraved plates, including the engraved portrait frontispiece, the two volumes present an extraordinary visual record of early dental instruments and procedures. Complete copies with all plates present, especially in this condition, are increasingly scarce.
Collation
Vol. I: [32], 408 pp., 22 engraved plates
Vol. II: [12], 477 pp., 20 engraved plates
Total: 929 pages + 42 engraved plates
Binding
Contemporary full calf, the spines richly gilt in floral compartments with raised bands and contrasting red title labels—an elegant and well-preserved 18th-century binding.
Condition
A very well-kept example. Leather lightly rubbed with minor wear to extremities; gilt decoration remains bright. Joints firm, text remarkably clean with only gentle age toning. All 42 engraved plates are present, crisp, and well-impressed. No missing leaves and no structural issues—an unusually sound and complete survival.
