Diogenite meteorite Erg Atoulia 002 from Mali in the Sahara region, a 6.9 cm end-cut Diogenite (HED) achondrite from the Vesta asteroid, weighing 37.4 g.
Description from the seller
In this lot, we are auctioning a fantastic and large final cut of a Diogenite meteorite, found in Gao Province (Mali), in the desert northwest of Africa known as Taoudenni. It showcases orthopyroxene crystals in a deep dark green, with very exotic reflections, set in a matrix of light brown tones.
It has recently been officially analyzed and classified under the name Erg Atoulia 002, following the discovery of the exact coordinates where this fall was found—something rare among meteorites found in northwest Africa—with a total known weight of only 5 kg worldwide. It features large green crystals and is quite compact, which is unusual for this type of meteorite.
Thanks to studies, it has been confirmed that HED meteorites (Howardites, Eucrites, and Diogenites) originate from the asteroid Vesta, making them differentiated rocky meteorites, that is, achondrites. Specifically, diogenites like this one come from the mantle, meaning from a deeper zone than their Howardite and Eucrite counterparts.
All our meteorites come with an IMCA (International Meteorite Collectors Association) certificate, ensuring the authenticity of all our meteorites for life. Buy with confidence.
Greetings and our best wishes.
