Wilhelm Apollinaris de Kostrowitzky, known as Guillaume Apollinaire (1880-1918), was a French poet and writer, critic, and art theorist. Born on August 26, 1880, in Rome, he died in Paris on November 9, 1918, from the Spanish flu, but was declared dead for France due to his involvement during the war.
Considered one of the most important French poets of the 20th century, he is the author of poems such as Zone, La Chanson du mal-aimé, and Le Pont Mirabeau, which have been adapted into songs several times throughout the century. The erotic aspect of his work—mainly three novels (one of which is lost), numerous poems, and introductions to licentious authors—has also become legendary. He experimented for a time with the practice of calligrammes (a term of his own invention, although he was not the genre's creator, referring to poems written in the shape of drawings rather than in traditional verse and stanzas). He was a champion of many artistic avant-gardes of his time, notably cubism and orphism, in which he participated as both poet and theorist of the New Spirit. A pioneer of surrealism, he coined the term in his play Les Mamelles de Tirésias (1917).
