Description from the seller
The Dutch insects - The Hague, Martinus Nijhoff, 1900 - (XV) 836 + 38 lithographs - half-leather binding
Good. Scuff and impact marks. Signature on the flyleaf. Interior pages discolored, with some spots here and there, foxing on the flyleaves. Tear (4cm) at the bottom of the inner margin of the text page near litho no. 16. Names written in pencil on one litho.
Contains 38 lithographs - all depicted - with hundreds of figures (butterflies, beetles, etc.) and 427 illustrations within the text.
De Nederlandsche Insecten (1900) by J.Th. Oudemans is a scientific standard work that provides a systematic overview of all insects found in the Netherlands around 1900. The book describes insects by order and family, with an emphasis on identification, classification, and physical characteristics.
The work contains many illustrations and follows the then-current 19th-century taxonomy. Ecology and behavior play a subordinate role; the primary goal is identification and documentation.
The book has long been an important reference for Dutch entomologists and is especially of historical value for the study of biodiversity and entomology.
