Stefan R. Landsberger (1955-2024) was trained as a sinologist at Leiden University, The Netherlands. Fascinated by totalitarian propaganda, he began collecting Chinese propaganda posters in the 1970s. His collection grew to become one of the largest private collections in the world. Having had access to these posters for such a long time, he came to see them as valuable primary sources for research on contemporary Chinese developments. For this reason, Landsberger used them as the basis for his Ph.D. research, which focused on materials published in the 1980s.
Wang Wenfang (1938-2020) was born in Zhaoyuan, Shandong Province. In 1957, he joined the Chinese Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts under the tutelage of Li Keran, Ye Qianyu, Jiang Zhaohe, Li Kuchan, and Zong Qixiang. After graduating in 1962, he was assigned to the Beijing Academy of Painting to become a professional painter. Five of his works were collected by the National Art Museum of China.
