London, Paris and New York: Fisher, Son & Co., undated [1836-1838]. 3 volumes. Vol I: ii, 80 pages 37 plates, Vol. II: 76 pages, 37 plates, Vol III. 100 pages, 4 pages general index, 46 plates, 2 maps. 27cm x 19.5cm. Hardback bound in brown half leather with gilt decorated spine and marbled boards. First edition with 120 steel engraved plates including titles, drawn from nature by William H. Bartlett, William Purser and Thomas Allom.
Rubbing, bumping and wear to the boards and spines and tanning and slight damage to the spine. Leaf with handwritten notes pasted on the paste-down front endpaper in Volume I. Pen and pencil markings and crossed out library stamp in the front endpapers in all three volumes, pencil markings in the back endpapers in the second and third volume. Foxing and browning throughout as usual. In Vol II. tissue guard on plate next to page 18 is damaged, tissue guard on plate next to page 20 is loose and tissue guards for plates next to page 43 and 66 are missing. Some water staining and creasing on the plates between pages 58-67 in Volume III. The text and the illustrations are clear, and the binding is solid. Overall, a handsome set in good condition.
