Description from the seller
Beautiful Romantic winter landscape
J F Hoppenbrouwers
The Hague 1819 - 1866 The Hague
Skaters on a frozen waterway
oil paint on panel
The painting is on an oak panel and is in good condition.
The whole is beautifully framed with handmade gold leaf.
Hoppenbrouwers received a painting education at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague and then apprenticed with Andreas Schelfhout. He painted in a romantic style, which strongly resembles his master's work in terms of composition and atmosphere.
Hoppenbrouwers was mainly known for his landscapes, often winter landscapes, where he frequently left the figure painting to his friend Charles Rochussen, and occasionally to others such as David Bles, Salomon Verveer, Johan Daniël Koelman, and Hendrik Scheeres. Additionally, he created a number of panoramic views, mostly small in size and often depicting the mountainous Rhine riverbank in Germany.
Hoppenbrouwers regularly exhibited at the Exhibition of Living Masters. He was friends with painter Johannes Cornelis Apol, and he became the mentor of his son Louis Apol. In 1866, Hoppenbrouwers died at the age of 47. His work is part of collections including the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, the Amsterdam Museum, the Teylers Museum in Haarlem, and the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. The Metropolitan Museum in New York also owns a winter landscape by Hoppenbrouwers in its collection.
The painting is carefully packaged and sent by registered mail.
