About the artist
Jean-Michel Meurice, born in 1938 in Lille, already had a double passion as a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tournai: painting and cinema. In 1960, during his military service in Algeria, he created one of his first works that combined both passions: a three-hundred-meter-long painted film, whose motif consists solely of the repetitive traces of fingers and brushes; projected onto a canvas, it transforms into a ten-minute moving painting. Since then, he has pursued a dual career as a painter and filmmaker.
In 1963, he traveled to the USA for the first time, where he discovered a painting style without codes, the abstraction of Ad Reinhardt, and the dripping and all-over techniques that had made Pollock famous. He painted with spray cans or sponges, repeating forms (stripes or dots) on large formats. The traditional canvas was often replaced by plastic films or other unusual supports. In 1966, he exhibited alongside Hantaï, Degottex, Buraglio, Parmentier, and Rouan at Jean Fournier in Paris and was one of the founders of the Support/Surface movement. Four of his 'Pénélopes' are part of the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou, and he designed the ceiling at the Musée Picasso in Antibes. In 1992, he was awarded the Grand Prix National for his entire body of work. His works have been exhibited worldwide (Centre National des Arts Plastiques Paris, Musée d'Art moderne de Saint-Étienne, Musée Fabre, Fondation Maeght, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lille, Hermitage, Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume, Rio de Janeiro Museum, Madrid Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art, etc.).
