About the artist

Hervé Télémaque is regarded as one of the most influential representatives of French Pop Art and figurative contemporary art.
Hervé Télémaque, born in 1937 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, left his birthplace at the age of 20 to initially settle in the vibrant art metropolis of New York. Here, Hervé Télémaque studied until 1960 at the Art Student's League and came into contact with pioneering trends of the post-war avant-garde, notably Abstract Expressionism and Americanized Surrealism, such as that of Arshile Gorky.
After completing his studies in 1961, Hervé Télémaque moved to Paris, where he interacted with the Surrealists and soon rose under the influence of this movement to become one of the pioneers of a new style: 'Narrative Figuration' or 'figuration narrative,' which has gone down in history as the 'French Pop Art.'
A key moment is marked by the year 1964, when American and English-influenced Pop Art experienced its first and spectacular appearance at the Venice Biennale, which also left a notable impression on the young Hervé Télémaque. Together with the slightly older artist colleague Bernard Rancillac and critic Gérald Gassiot-Talabot, Hervé Télémaque then initiated a legendary exhibition project: the group show 'Mythologies quotidiennes' ('Everyday Mythologies'). Here, 34 modern artists working in a new, pop-inspired figurative style, often with a critical edge, came together as the nucleus of French Pop Art, a stylistic period to which, besides Hervé Télémaque himself, artists such as Eduardo Arroyo, Valerio Adami, Gilles Aillaud, Erró, Gérard Fromanger, and Peter Stämpfli are also attributed.
Characteristic of Hervé Télémaques' work during the Pop era was the depiction of everyday objects; specifically, he dedicated himself not only to early collages and assemblages but also significantly to painting, graphics, and sculpture.
Works by the internationally renowned Hervé Télémaque are exhibited in numerous significant museums and collections, including the Arte y Naturaleza Centro De Arte in Madrid, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museu Berardo in Lisbon, and the St. Louis University Museum of Art. Hervé Télémaque passed away in France in 2022.
