Description from the seller

Beautiful copy, very fresh and preserved in a lovely romantic cardboard case: plates struck in gold featuring a large composition of scrolls, rich gilded decoration, and compartmentalized on the back. Three gilded slices.

In this work, Jules Janin provides a particularly successful portrayal of Parisian elegant society during the Romantic era; he analyzes and comments on the customs, habits, as well as the history of both famous and unknown Parisians; he describes the capital and its surroundings such as the Bois de Boulogne, the Tuileries, the Champs-Elysées, etc., transporting us through characteristic places or events like the Opera Ball, the theaters, the cafés, and so on.

The remarkable illustration consists of 18 superb plates on steel (printed on heavy paper) after Eugène Lami and engraved by English artists, along with charming wood engravings in the text. Collated.

Original edition and first print run (1843).

Condition: Well-preserved binding, minor handling defects (small tears at the ends of the headbands, pierced corners, slightly soiled spine), very clean plates. Interior in good condition, text without foxing, plates browned with some foxing. Endpapers very clean.
