Description from the seller

Large antique tobacco box, second-grade silver with gilded exterior and engravings of a farm by a (Frisian?) lake, a boat, horse, and cow. The hallmarks inside the box have become illegible, but the lion facing right, indicating second-grade silver, is still clearly visible. The Minerva mark can also be seen, but the letter is no longer readable. I believe this beautiful box originates from Friesland, due to the farm by the lake with the boat. I also estimate its age to be between 1800 and 1850, based in part on the cow's horns. The box shows heavy use by the farmer, which adds to its rich history. My impression is of a wealthy Frisian farmer, walking in old clothes across his yard, with a tobacco box in the pocket of his baggy trousers!
Beautiful box for a collector or as a “special gift.”
