Description from the seller
Helm, Battle of the Bulge, 1944
This late December is historically strongly associated with the Battle of the Bulge, with Bastogne as one of the main focal points!
Original M1 helmet, 1960s or 1970s.
Souvenir of the Battle of the Bulge
On December 16, the Germans launched a major offensive aimed at stopping the rapidly advancing Allied troops.
The Allied troops were completely caught off guard by the massive surge of the German attack.
General Eisenhower therefore sent the 101 Airborne to Bastogne, under the command of Anthony McAuliffe.
On December 20, Bastogne was a strategic hub that was encircled by the Germans.
On December 22, the Germans offered the Americans the surrender.
This was followed by the famous response from General McAuliffe, 'NUTS!'
These days, the Nuts chocolate bar with nuts is still popular.
Around Christmas 1944, the city was liberated by the troops of General Patton.
The decorations on the helmet are Postwar.
