Description from the seller
Antique Buddhist Thangka depicting Green Tara (Consecrated)
This is an antique / early Buddhist Thangka depicting Green Tara, one of the most revered female deities in Tibetan Buddhism, associated with compassion, protection, and swift enlightened activity.
At the upper register, Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) is depicted.
In the central upper area below, Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig) is shown, flanked on the left and right by Dharma protectors, forming a traditional hierarchical composition.
The painting displays rich, darker tones and a harmonious overall composition. The pigments have aged naturally, contributing to an authentic and contemplative appearance.
Unusual iconographic detail
A particularly interesting feature is that the central figure of Green Tara is depicted with a third eye on the forehead.
This is unusual in standard Green Tara iconography. As the surrounding figures follow conventional iconographic rules, this appears to be a deliberate and conscious iconographic variation, rather than an error or later alteration.
Condition
The thangka is in good overall condition, consistent with age and traditional use. Signs of age and wear are present and should be regarded as part of its authenticity and history.
On the reverse, the inscription “OM – AH – HUM” is visible, indicating that the thangka was ritually consecrated.
Pigment on textile
Dimensions: approximately 64 × 44 cm
Condition: Good, with age-related wear.
Provenance: From private collection
