“Kana Yomi Hakkenden, Volume 14 (Complete in Two Volumes: Upper & Lower)”, published in 1851 (Kaei 4).
Written by Tamenaga Shunsui II, one of the most influential popular fiction writers of the late Edo period, this work is a kana-adapted, reader-friendly rendition inspired by Nansō Satomi Hakkenden. The illustrations are by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, a master ukiyo-e artist internationally renowned for his dynamic warrior imagery, bold compositions, and expressive figures.
The dramatic covers vividly depict heroic warriors and elegant female figures rendered in Kuniyoshi’s powerful and highly recognizable style, making this set especially appealing to collectors of ukiyo-e, illustrated books, and Japanese literary history.
