Angrites are a very small and rare group of achondrite-type meteorites. Their main characteristic that makes them so special is that they are the oldest igneous rocks in the Solar System, with crystallization ages of around 4.55 billion years. The angrites are named after the meteorite Angra dos Reis, which fell in Brazil in 1869.
They are a rare group of acondrites mainly composed of augite, with some olivine, anorthite, and troilite. We are talking about basaltic rocks, often porous, with vesicle diameters reaching up to 2.5 cm.
This specimen is officially classified as Rafsa 007 and was found in Algeria in 2023. Despite being a meteorite from northwest Africa, it bears a proper name based on the exact coordinates of the location where it was found, which is uncommon among Saharan meteorites. Only a few grams of this meteorite exist worldwide, making this specimen one of the few that will be available for sale.
