Polished tektite meteorite from Laos, Indochinite, weighing 28.3 g, named TEKTITE -impact of METEORITE-.
Description from the seller
Tectites (from the Greek tektos, melted) are objects of natural glass formed by the impact of large meteorites on the Earth's surface. Tectites are the driest known minerals, with an average water content of 0.005%. This is very rare, as most of the craters where tectites formed were underwater before the impact. Zircon partially melted within some tectites has also been discovered. This, along with the water content, suggests that tectites formed under very high temperature and pressure (similar to those needed to form diamonds).
Indochinitas like those in this batch were formed by the impact of a large meteorite 800,000 years ago, in what is now Laos, according to the latest studies. The collision was brutal, so much so that molten material covered 10% of the Earth's surface, with indochinitas even found in Antarctica.
This lot is a good size, has a beautiful teardrop shape, and is perfectly polished. Don't miss this opportunity!
