A 1967 hand-signed Nichiko Nichiren Gohonzon hanging scroll from Japan, measuring 178.7 cm by 72.3 cm, with Makie lacquered roller ends and a paper, hand-painted surface, in good condition.
Description from the seller
This hanging scroll presents a Nichiren Buddhist mandala (Gohonzon), inscribed in bold calligraphy by Nichiko (日香) and dated New Year, 1967 (Showa 42). At its center appears the invocation “Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō” (南無妙法蓮華経), surrounded by sacred inscriptions in the traditional format of Nichiren mandalas. The brushwork is expressive and reverent, embodying both spiritual devotion and artistic discipline. The scroll is mounted in ornate brocade, enhancing its ceremonial presence, and the roller ends are decorated with maki-e lacquerwork, adding refined detail and craftsmanship. This piece offers insight into postwar Japanese Buddhist art and serves as a meaningful artifact for collectors of Nichiren iconography, Zen aesthetics, and traditional Japanese calligraphy.
