Description from the seller
柴原希祥 Shibahara Kisho (1885-1954)
An artist of the Kyoto art scene. Born in Okayama, he studied at Kyoto Municipal School of Fine Arts and Crafts (now Kyoto City University of Arts), subsequently teaching there while actively exhibiting primarily at the Bunten and Teiten exhibitions.
with signature and seal 'Kisho' 希祥
A serene winter scene by Shibahara Kisho (1885–1954), a noted Japanese painter associated with the Kyoto and Osaka art circles. This hanging scroll presents a pigeon quietly perched on a snow-laden pine branch, rendered with Kisho’s characteristic delicacy and atmospheric brushwork. The warm yellow silk ground contrasts beautifully with the cool tones of snow and pine needles, enhancing the soft, poetic mood of a calm winter day. Kisho’s refined use of color and restrained composition highlight the dignity of the bird and the quiet resilience of nature. Subtle speckles of falling snow animate the otherwise tranquil scene, demonstrating the painter’s sensitivity to seasonal expression—an essential theme in traditional Japanese art. The scroll comes with its original wooden box (tomobako), inscribed and signed by the artist, further confirming the work’s authenticity and provenance. A fine example of early 20th-century Japanese Nihonga painting, suitable for collectors who appreciate elegance, atmosphere, and seasonal beauty.
