Description from the seller
Great masterful painting – 'After Rubens' – A. Van Brandt (1971) – Oil on canvas – 70 × 80 cm – Very rare edition
Description
Impressive and monumental painting titled 'Naar Rubens', created by A. Van Brandt in 1971. It is a high-quality 20th-century study of Peter Paul Rubens, based on his famous head studies of African men that Rubens made in Antwerp.
Rubens did not depict these models in a context of slavery, but exactly the opposite.
He was one of the first European artists to depict people of African descent realistically, with dignity, and individually, paying special attention to expression, character, and humanity. As a result, these studies today hold significant art historical importance and emotional value.
A. Van Brandt has masterfully translated this into a warm, expressive, and lifelike work. The skin tones, light reflections, and character portraits are executed with great technical skill. Due to its size (70 × 80 cm) and rich expression, this piece becomes a real eye-catcher.
Perfect as a luxurious Christmas gift, a collector's item, or a unique decorative piece with a strong historical appearance.
