The Winemaker
Weingut Franz Künstler is a legendary name in German wine. The family’s winemaking tradition dates back to 1648 in Unter-Tannowitz in South Moravia. After World War Two, Franz Künstler and his family were expelled and forced to rebuild their life in Hochheim am Main in 1965. Franz, trained at Weinsberg and experienced in Baden, established the new estate on the banks of the Main River and built a reputation for uncompromising quality. In 1982, his son Gunter was entrusted with his first vintage. With formal education in Geisenheim, he assumed full control in 1992 and later expanded the vineyard holdings in 1996 by acquiring the former Aschrott estate. He and his wife Monika continued to build the estate’s acclaim, gaining national and international awards.
Awards and Recognition
The estate became a founding VDP member in 1994, a seal of excellence reserved for Germany’s top producers. VDP membership requires strict vineyard classification by terroir: Grosse Lage (Grand Cru), Erste Lage (Premier Cru), and Ortswein (Village Wine).
The Hochheim Domdechaney vineyard is classified as Grosse Lage, with chalky marl soils producing wines of great depth, minerality, and longevity.
The Vintage and Vineyard
The 1997 vintage in Rheingau is regarded as outstanding, marked by elegance and ageworthiness. Domdechaney, historically owned by Mainz cathedral, is famed for powerful structure, pronounced minerality, and classic Hochheim fruit—peach and apricot notes that evolve into honeyed and petrol tones with age.
Tasting Notes and Condition
While the bottle remains sealed, mature dry Rieslings of this caliber typically display a golden hue, with aromas of dried apricot, honey, petrol, and toasted nuts. The palate offers freshness and a long, mineral-driven finish. The bottle is in excellent cellar condition, with perfect fill level and intact capsule.
Provenance
Purchased directly from Weingut Franz Künstler and stored in a climate-controlled cellar by OHMS Connoisseurs Choice, authenticity is guaranteed.
Drinking Window
Enjoy now or cellar until 2040 and beyond.
Shipping
Fast, secure, insured shipping: EU via DPD, wider Europe and overseas via EMS or DHL.
This is a true collector’s item and a rare opportunity to own a piece of Rheingau history from a top-tier VDP estate. Do not miss the chance to add this gem to your cellar.
