European school (XIX) - Claude Ptolémée, Astronome Grec

Original and rare painting, oil on thick wood panel (probably oak) from the late 18th century, early 19th century. Mediterranean school (France or Italy) depicting Claudius Ptolemy in the library of Alexandria with a view of the garden. On the table are his study attributes: knowledge books, an hourglass, and a terrestrial globe; Ptolemy is studying a document. Panel dimensions: 47 cm high x 67 cm wide x approximately 1.8 to 2 cm thick. Weight 3.785 kg (8.34 pounds). Excellent condition, no restorations, but cleaned and revarnished by a professional in the 1990s.
Our research did not allow us to find a similar piece, so we will qualify it as an authentic and unique item. Provenance: private collection, acquired before 1880.
