Description from the seller
Salvador Dali: “Swans Reflecting Elephants, 1937”.
Swans Reflecting Elephants (1937) is a painting by the Spanish surrealist Salvador Dalí. This painting comes from Dalí's paranoia-critical period. It is painted with oil on canvas and features one of Dalí's famous double images.
The double images formed an important part of Dalí's 'paranoia-critical method,' which he outlined in his 1935 essay 'The Conquest of the Irrational.' He described his process as a 'spontaneous method of irrational understanding, based on the interpretative critical association of delusional phenomena.' Dalí used this method to create the hallucinatory forms, double images, and visual illusions that filled his paintings in the 1930s.
Just like in the earlier Metamorphoses of Narcissus, Swans reflecting elephants mirror the reflection in a lake to create the double image seen in the painting. The three swans in front of bare, leafless trees are reflected in the lake, causing the swans' necks to become the elephants' trunks, their bodies to become the elephants' ears, and the trees to become the elephants' legs. In the background of the painting, a Catalan landscape is depicted in fiery autumn colors, with brushwork creating swirling patterns in the cliffs around the lake, contrasting with the stillness of the water.
The painting was one of the many artworks stolen by the Nazis in France and Belgium between 1940 and 1944.
