Description from the seller
Description: I present to you a beautiful set of 4 large-volume books measuring 24x17 cm and weighing 5.2 kg, containing the 'Complete Works of Tacitus' (C. Cornelii Taciti Opera), by the Roman historian Gaius or Publius Cornelius Tacitus (c. 55–c. 120).
The condition of the books is excellent, as shown in the photos.
This famous edition is known as the 'Dauphin Tacitus' (due to the dedication of the work to the Dauphin of France). The edition was produced by the great Jesuit orator and scholar of the Classics, Charles de la Rue (Carolus Ruaeus) (1643-1725). The 'Classics of the Dauphin' were dedicated to Louis of France, the Grand Dauphin (1661-1711), son of Louis XIV, the Sun King, and heir to the throne until his death in 1711. The series of Classics of the Dauphin was the result of the work of a team of 39 scholars and was edited by Pierre-Daniel Huet, who worked with Jacques Bousset, tutor to the Dauphin.
The specimen is illustrated with a spectacular engraved frontispiece depicting a galley crossing the sea, propelled by spirited rowers. A poet jumps into the sea where a monster waits to devour him.
Our copy contains the following works by Tacitus.
Histories of Tacitus: A major work by its author, it narrates the period from the beginning of Galba's second consulship (69 AD) until the death of Domicitus (96 AD). The preserved portion ends with Titus's campaigns against Jerusalem.
2.- Annals of Tacitus: A major work by its author, which narrates the period from the death of Augustus to that of Nero. Of the Annals, the first four books are preserved, along with the beginning of the fifth, the sixth (except for its start), and then books XI to XVI with gaps at the beginning and end. The first six are dedicated to the reign of Tiberius. In the preserved second part, the reigns of Claudius from the year 47 and Nero up to 66 are included.
Germany: It is a description of the origins and customs of the Germans and their country.
4.- LIFE OF JULIUS AGRICOLA: Narrates the life of the Roman general Julius Agricola (40 - 94 AD), focusing on his military campaigns and his governance in Britain.
5.- Dialogue of the speakers: It deals with the decline of oratory, which was also addressed by Marcus Fabius Quintilian in a lost writing titled 'De causis corruptæ eloquentiæ (On the Causes of the Corruption of Oratory)'.
