Volume dedicated to Greece and Italy, 1844.

Magnificent illustrated volume from 1844 of the encyclopedic collection 'Le Monde'. 33 steel-engraved plates by Achille Réveil (1800-1876), an internationally renowned French master engraver. Printed by Béthune and Plon, Paris. Antique half-leather binding with marbled boards and gilt tooling on the spine. All plates included. Good used condition, foxing consistent with the period — perfect for collectors of romantic and antique historical engravings.

The engravings

33 plates illustrating ancient/modern monuments, civil/military/religious costumes of Greeks and Romans. Each engraving bears the signature of the master engraver Réveil, renowned for his exquisite line engraving technique. Subjects include: priestesses of Athens, Roman emperors, inhabitants of Naples, ancient processions, etc.

Binding & Condition

Vintage half-leather binding with gold tooling on the spine and gold borders.
Yellow/golden marbling on dishes.
Yellowed paper (normal 19th century), foxing (natural oxidation)
All 33 boards are present and well bound.
