Samuel Ireland (17?-1800) was one of the most successful artists who devoted himself to the career of topographic print-making. In the ten years between 1790 and 1800 he brought out six books of views, containing in all some two hundred and eighty plates, all aquatinted by himself after his own drawings... He began his artistic career as a copier of prints and a dealer in them, and in 1760 gained a medal from the Society of Arts.

With additional half title, decorative allegorical title page, 1 engraved map and 28 (complete as list) uncoloured aquatint plates, printed in sepia, and publisher's advertisement bound at rear, bookplate of Lady Margaret Hall.
It bears a cancelled ink library stamp from the same college to the front pastedown, 19th-century red half Morocco gilt. 8vo, measuring;24.5cm x 17.1cm. 206 pages.


Condition: See photos as part of condition report: Bound in contemporary half Morocco. Holding firmly, rubbing to the extremities. All plates present. Text block firm, bookplate and Oxford stamp to the front pastedown, pencil notes to the FFEP. marginal foxing and toning.
