Description from the seller
Nude in Sheep, Little Blue Peep
Michael Joseph — photograph taken in the 1970s
Original darkroom print, panoramic format, blue-toned and signed by the photographer
At first glance: a tide of fleece.
Then, suddenly—a flicker of bare skin.
A lone figure, serene and improbable, stands among the flock,
as if risen from the earth itself,
or quietly smuggled in from a dream.
In Nude in Sheep, Michael Joseph fuses the pastoral with the provocative.
The image is painterly in composition, audacious in its humour,
and unmistakably his in wit and timing.
Here is Joseph at his most playful and subversive.
Echoes of Bruegel’s crowded chaos ripple through the frame,
while the erotic charge of Man Ray
and the stark, unsettling surrealism of Bill Brandt shimmer beneath the surface.
Where others might have seen only livestock,
Joseph saw theatre—
and staged a scene that feels at once impossible and inevitable.
Photographed in the 1970s and printed by Joseph himself not long after,
this is an authentic vintage darkroom print.
The panoramic format heightens the sense of abundance and intrusion,
while the blue toning lends the image an otherworldly calm,
cooling the humour into something quietly uncanny.
This example is signed by the photographer and bears
the original Michael Joseph Pictures studio label on the reverse.
No edition is recorded; this is a singular work in this size,
embodying Joseph’s precise eye and irreverent intelligence—
a photographer equally fluent in fine art and the commercial world,
and always delighted by mischief.
The image is a study in paradox:
wool against flesh, symmetry against rupture,
herd instinct against singular presence—
a quiet rebellion, clothed in nothing but vision.
Mount dimensions: 30 cm wide × 20 cm high
Dispatched with devotion and care via Colissimo.
Please see my reviews for reassurance—I take pride in preserving
and rehoming these one-off historical artefacts.
A rare and striking collectible,
and a true conversation piece from a master of visual mischief.
