Arthur Rimbaud is a French poet (1854-1891). Although brief, his poetic work is characterized by a prodigious thematic and stylistic density.
Arthur Rimbaud wrote his first poems at the age of 15. After a brief period of initiation, through the assimilation of the style of major contemporary poets, already developing a frank originality in approaching classic themes ('The Sleeper in the Valley,' 'Venus Anadyomene'), he sought to surpass these influences by developing his own theoretical concepts, declaring that the poet must become a 'seer,' that is, seek and describe the unknown beyond usual human perceptions, even if it means sacrificing his own mental or physical integrity. From then on, he radically innovated in terms of formal daring, even approaching the genre of prose poetry, scattering his works with enigmatic apophthegms such as 'change life,' 'possess truth in a soul and body,' or 'one must be absolutely modern,' which would be adopted as slogans by 20th-century poets, particularly the surrealist movement.
Around the age of 20, he suddenly abandoned literature, having published only one self-published work — 'A Season in Hell' — and a few scattered poems in confidential magazines, which still contribute to his myth. He then initially dedicated himself to learning several languages, and later, driven by his marginal, anti-bourgeois, and libertarian ideas, he chose an adventurous life, whose travels led him to Abyssinia, where he became a merchant and explorer.
Poems like Le Bateau ivre, Le Dormeur du val, or Voyelles are among the most famous in French poetry. The precociousness of his genius, his dazzling literary career, and his brief and adventurous life contribute to shaping his legend and making him one of the giants of world literature.
