This hand-carved wooden plaque features a dynamic dragon rendered in the traditional style of Japanese farmers’ art (Nomin Bijutsu). Farmers’ art refers to wooden folk craftwork produced during the agricultural off-season from the Taisho period into the early Showa period.
In Japanese culture, the dragon is a powerful guardian creature associated with water, protection, prosperity, and good fortune. It is often depicted as a symbol of strength and the ability to overcome challenges.
The plaque comes with a hanging cord attached, allowing it to be displayed immediately.
Mogi Fumio, the creator of this piece, was an active member of the Nagano Farmers’ Art Association and also taught woodcarving classes for children, contributing to the continuation of this regional craft tradition.
The work bears the artist’s mark on the front. On the reverse, it is inscribed: “乙卯歳 十二月吉日 茂木文雄,” indicating that it was created in December of the Year of the Wood Rabbit (1975).
Good to very good condition, with a few minor dents and small scratches around the edges.
