London: The Walpole Press, 1899. 2 volumes. Vol I: lxxxiii, 249 pages, Vol II: 317 pages. 22cm x 14cm. Quarter vellum binding with turquoise gilt-framed cloth boards, gilt lettered spines, and gilt top edge. Comes with a dark blue cardboard slipcase. Bibliophile illustrated, limited and numbered Grand Edition de Luxe of this novel that explores themes of ideal beauty, love, and gender identity through a complex love triangle involving a cross-dressing woman. This being No. 93 of 1,000 total copies, printed on high-quality Japanese vellum paper. Comes with 19 beautiful plates including captioned tissue guards printed in two states each engraved by François-Xavier Le Sueur after the original drawings by the artist Édouard Toudouze.
Rubbing, bumping, wear, and some light soiling to the slipcase, boards and spine. The turquoise cloth of the boards is fraying a bit at the edges on both volumes and there are some loose threads. Pencil markings on the front free endpaper and the back pastedown endpaper in both volumes. There is a small hole on page 83, and a creased top corner on pages 147/148 and 149/150 in Vol I. Browning and spotting in the endpapers and flyleaves in both volumes. The text is clear, the paper is crisp, and the illustrations are vibrant and in excellent condition, and the binding is tight in both volumes. Overall, a handsome set in very good condition.
